Thousands of couples across the United States and around the world enjoy ballroom dancing! It involves beautiful dances like the Slow Waltz to saucy dance routines like the Rumba, Tango, Mambo, Cha Cha, and Samba. If you want to maintain the standing you’ve earned on the dance floor, you need to know these 6 Things About Ballroom Dance Etiquette to keep your reputation pristine in the ballroom dance circuit.

Practice Good Grooming Habits

One of the most important things to remember when ballroom dancing is proper grooming. Before heading to the dance floor to dance with others, be sure to freshen up or take a shower.  Ballroom dancing will make you sweat; the last thing you want is to dance with a partner who’s uncomfortable because you’re not properly groomed.

Try to avoid eating food with garlic and onions. If possible, have some mint with you to keep your breath smelling fresh. Shy away from wearing perfume or cologne.  Some people may be sensitive to their scent.

Dress Appropriately

Always wear clothes that feel comfortable when ballroom dancing. At practice, it’s O.K. to wear dance pants or sweats, but refrain from wearing torn, unkempt, or dirty clothing.  When you are out on the town, go with casual or business casual, depending on the event you’re attending. Men, try to avoid belt buckles that might poke your partner or get stuck in her dress. Wear comfortable shoes as much as possible, and avoid wearing sneakers or slippers.

Avoid Criticizing Your Partner

Everyone dances differently, so if you don’t like how others dance, just keep your thoughts to yourself. Don’t criticize or talk about your partner’s dancing or other’s dancing to another dancer. Most importantly, never attempt to embarrass someone on the dance floor. Just have fun and respect others at all times.

Enjoy Ballroom Dancing

Remember, you’re dancing for fun, so enjoy the dance floor. Don’t be too serious unless you’re joining a contest or other event when it requires you to be. Just be gracious and have fun. Offer support to new ballroom dancers. They may not always get it the first time, so be patient.

Don’t be Rude

Accidents can also happen when ballroom dancing. Your partner may occasionally step on your toe or bump into you, especially when they’re a beginner. When this happens, just keep your cool and smile. Try to avoid being rude to avoid embarrassing your partner and yourself.

Appreciate Your Partner

If you’re joining a competition, don’t feel bad if you don’t win. Instead, congratulate the winning couple. When you’re dancing, don’t forget to thank your partner when the dance is over.
