Dancing is a fantastic way for couples to spend time together. It has the potential to bring them closer together and lets them express emotion through movement.
Unfortunately, too many people miss out on this experience because they don’t know how to start. We’re here to tell you that it’s easier than you think!
Here are a handful of simple dance moves you can use if you’re new to dancing or looking to prepare for an upcoming event, such as a wedding. Incorporate these into your choreography practice, and you and your partner will be ready to impress in no time!
The Side Basic
The Side Basic Step is a great starting point for couples who want to kick off their dancing journey. It’s extremely easy to learn and can be used for a majority of genres, including Pop, Tango, Rumba, Salsa, and Cha-Cha.
Facing each other, hold both of your hands and take a small step to the side with your left foot before bringing your feet together with a small step with your right one. Then repeat it in the opposite direction, taking a small step with your right foot first and then a small step with your left foot.
You can do this basic move in all kinds of different combinations, from slow and graceful movements to sharp and exciting ones, adding steps in between. Experiment with different speeds, tempos, and arm movements to find a style that feels natural and comfortable for you.
The Box Step
Next, let’s take a look at the box step. This is a popular move typically used in Waltzes or slow Latin dances. The only tricky part is that you’ll need to adjust your movements to the beat of the music. While most songs follow a 4/4 rhythm, meaning four beats per measure, Waltz is written in a 3/4 rhythm, meaning three beats per measure.
As such, you’ll count “1,2,3 – 1,2,3,’ with a strong accent on the “One” and quicker steps on the “two and three.” In total, you’ll repeat the three-count sequence twice for a total of six steps. As the name suggests, these steps resemble a square pattern.

The Dip
Finally, an all-time favorite move for couples is the dip. You’ve probably seen it in the movies – and now you can do it too! This step usually comes at the end of a dance sequence, and it’s sure to draw some “oohs” and “aahs” from your audience.
A certain level of flexibility and strength is required for this move, so make sure to practice it beforehand. You’ll want to stand with your feet slightly apart, and your partner should lean backward while you hold them up in a hugging fashion. Keep their body close to yours as you dip them forward in a slow, controlled motion. Bring them back up to their original position in the same manner.
