The Proper Order of Dances at a Wedding

Dancing is usually the highlight of a wedding reception. During the wedding reception, the newly married couple takes their first dance as husband and wife. If you’re getting married soon, read this article to know the proper order of dances at a wedding. Feel free to get in touch with us if you need help with wedding dance lessons, or if you want to learn more about our ballroom dance classes.

Couple’s Grand Entrance and First Dance

At the reception, the guests will take their seats while waiting for the couple’s grand entrance, followed by the maid of honor, bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc. As soon as everyone has taken their seats, the couple will then start with their first dance. Some couples may decide to take dance lessons first to ensure they’re fully prepared.

Dance With the Parents

After the first dance or after slicing the cake, the father of the bride would usually ask his daughter to dance with him along with the mother-son dance. The father of the groom will then dance with his daughter-in-law, and the mother of the bride will dance with the groom. The parent dances can be right after the first dance or when everyone has settled in. This depends on the wedding program prepared by the host.

Wedding Party Dance

After the parent dances, the members of the wedding party would take the floor. The maid of honor may dance with the best man, or the bridesmaid may dance with the groomsman. The host may also simply invite some of the guests to take the dance floor.

Money Dance

The money dance is when the bride and groom dance with their guests. The guests will pin money on the bride or groom in exchange for a dance. This usually occurs after everyone has taken their meals and after the toasts.

Some tips for wedding dances:

We highly recommend you consider rehearsing your first dance with your partner. If possible, get wedding dance lessons to ensure you get it right the first time. Don’t forget to pick a meaningful song, something sentimental and significant. It’s also best to change to a more comfortable dress so that you can dance comfortably.
